Do not attempt to open your garage door manually when a spring has broken. Do not ask your motor to do it either. A garage door without functioning springs weighs between 60 and 120 kilograms. That weight is completely unbalanced. Forcing the door risks the door falling rapidly, damaging the motor, snapping cables, or causing serious injury.

Torsion Springs vs Extension Springs: The Danger Zones
Torsion springs sit horizontally above the door and are under extreme rotational tension — hundreds of foot-pounds of force. When they snap, the energy releases instantly. The broken coil can become a projectile. This is not an exaggeration. Torsion spring replacement requires specialist winding bars, torque calibration, and protective equipment. It is not a YouTube tutorial job.
Extension springs run along the sides of the door on older systems. They are under less tension than torsion springs, but still dangerous if handled without the correct tools. Both types are found across North Shore suburbs — torsion springs are standard on modern sectional doors in St Ives, Turramurra and Pymble. What to Do While Waiting for Scott to Arrive on Site
Do not try to operate the door. Do not try to lift the door manually. Do not let children near the door area.
If your car is trapped inside and you need it urgently, call us — we can often talk you through a safe manual release of the motor using the red emergency cord, which disconnects the motor drive from the door. This allows the door to be lifted manually when springs are intact. If the spring is broken, do not attempt this.
